Metabolism of Cities is a community-run platform. The organisation consists of members who, sharing the same values and mission, come together to collect information, record videos, write papers, build tools, and do many other activities to further the use of urban metabolism. Most of the work is done remotely, with all members working from their own place of residence. Metabolism of Cities members volunteer their time and generally work or study in fields related to urban metabolism, material flows, and/or sustainability. More about our team >
The team is continuously looking for people to join in on these efforts! There are two main roles for volunteers:
A data contributor helps to expand Metabolism of Cities’ MultipliCity platform by uploading data, photos, publications, maps, and other relevant information about particular cities. Contributors do not need to have specialist knowledge or training - the system is built so that everybody can help upload data and information. Data contributors will have an (online) interview with a Metabolism of Cities team member to go over the process and answer any questions.

The team at Metabolism of Cities works on everything that is required to make the organisation an active, productive, and inviting community. The team members are organised in a number of Task Forces that are in charge of particular topics. People are invited to review the task forces and identify those that are of their interest.
When signing up as a team member, you will be contacted by the Task Force Coordinator and/or the Task Force Leader of the relevant Task Force. As a way for everybody to get used to the work and the interaction, each applicant will be asked to complete an “entry exam” task. This will be relevant and useful to the selected task force and upon its completion the applicant will become an official Metabolism of Cities team member.
