Metabolism of Cities is a non-profit organisation registered in Brussels, Belgium. Our goal is to advance the use of urban metabolism research in policy and practice. Our core vehicle to achieve that is our community-driven website, through which we disseminate information, make available open source tools, and organise community activities. However, we also engage in research and consultancy projects that help us further our goals.
The projects that we engage in could either be commissioned by funders who seek us out, or actively pursued by Metabolism of Cities. In either case, we have set out a number of ground rules around this type of work.
- The projects must revolve around the topic of urban sustainability and bear a link with urban metabolism tools and principles.
- The project should align with our guiding principles as set out in our bylaws.
- At least 15% of the funding should be made available to Metabolism of Cities, which is how the organisation can maintain its platform and fund other projects and activities to further its goals.
Metabolism of Cities is an organisation driven by volunteer members and outside researchers are not employed. These projects are therefore to be performed by a number of our Metabolism of Cities members, who have made themselves available for these kinds of assignments. In order for someone to be included in the team of Metabolism of Cities consultants, each individual must be an active member in our network and have a track record of contributions to one or more task forces in the Metabolism of Cities platform.

List of services
Here is a list of the current services that we offer and carry out in order to reach our main goals.
We help cities, universities or other stakeholders to gather and visualise resource and waste flows and stocks data from a specific territory, which can be done over a relatively short period of time. The result is an urban metabolism dashboard for your territory as well as a new platform for collaboration between local stakeholders.
Organising symposia or seminars / Speaking
We organise seminars, workshops or symposia on the topics of urban metabolism, circular economy in cities, industrial ecology, material flow analysis, open data, open science, etc. and bring together academics, policy makers and practitioners. We also provide presentations and talks on these topics.
Training / Education / Capacity Building
Urban metabolism is still a relatively new field in policy and practice. We can help you and your team to better understand how to use urban metabolism to tackle urban and territorial resource/waste challenges in a systemic manner thanks to general and specific trainings. We also provide trainings about our free and open source tools such as Multiplicity, OMAT or PlatformU.
Urban/territorial metabolism study / Circularity roadmaps
We have extensive experience in studying the metabolism of cities and territories. We can help you measure the flows and stocks of your territory in a synthetic and systemic manner. Depending on your needs, this study can be standalone or part of a larger process, co-developing an operational roadmap or action plan to transition towards a more sober, dematerialised and low carbon society.
While we generally promote the uptake of existing research in policy and practice, we also co-develop urban metabolism research with academics and research institutes about advancing methodologies, database structures, identifying resource use drivers, etc.
Public awareness campaigns
We work with you on making urban metabolism more accessible and attractive to a wider group of stakeholders and to the general public. We do so, thanks to exhibitions, school and targeted groups workshops, online videos, etc.
We work with
UN Environment, League of the Cities of the Philippines, OVAM, ULB, ICLEI, H2020, Urban Studies Foundation, CIVA, Vlaanderen Circulair, City of The Hague, Delft-Leiden Hub
