Description

Add a page for useful resources when making visualisations.
Include the tool, what it does, some examples, how to get it, and some links to useful tutorials, courses.

Including for example:

  • Blender (open source alternative to Adobe, good for animations and scenes)

  • Inkscape (open source alternative to Adobe, good for graphics)

  • A-frame (web based VR thing in Mozilla Firefox)

  • QGIS (open source alternative to ESRI)

  • Python (coding as it relates to, for example Sankey diagrams)

  • websites, techniques to create different types of visualisations

  • websites of good information places, like https://ourworldindata.org, https://informationisbeautiful.net/, https://d3js.org/ - different to the libraries in that it's not focused on UM, more for inspiration.

Discussion and updates

New task was created

Task was assigned to Bernelle Verster

This is a great idea Bernelle and I'm sure this kind of article / series of articles will be very helpful!

Just so you know... baaaaaack in the day we created a blog post that covered this topic. You can see it here. It's definitely time for a newer and more complete article, but just so you are aware of it!

Lastly, one of the key things we want to develop within our new data portal is a way to generate various visualizations based on uploaded stocks and flows data. The options include bar/line/pie charts, but also sankeys and choropleth map. So for the second-last point (websites, techniques to create different types of visualisations) I'd be happy to assist in writing something up on our website's options. We'll also keep you informed through the forum so you can have a look at things.

In any case, great task and I look forward to it coming together!
