Description

At the moment, at least to my knowledge, it is not possible yet to add a description to a reference space, without going to the back end. Concretely, I'd like to add a description to the Vancouver landfill from a report that I've already added. Ideally, it can be stated if the description was made up or if it is a citation for which the source can then be referred to.

This was now embedded. It works as follows:

  • Those with editing permissions (admins and data processors for the site) will see MODERATOR TOOLS at the top. This previously featured a link to add photos, and now also has a general EDIT link. Click that link.
  • There is a form where people can change the name or the description -- after selecting what they will change and entering a short description of the change they can make the modification
  • After saving it the system will record who changed what. There is a changelog at the bottom of each reference space to show that changes were made (and date and details). In the back-end, the system records a full audit trail including the exact description of each previous version. At some point we can make this visible / allow for roll-backs to previous editions. For now we simply store it and show the general details.

Cool to have this option now! Thanks Paul :)

What I had meant with linking it to a source that is already existing in our library, is that in the "Description changes based on external source(s)", one could add the ID of that file in a field there too (the same way things are linked in the data article), e.g. "752959" from my report example. The user can then follow a link to that item to see the rest of the document, plus source (all metadata etc.). It would look a bit cleaner, compared to adding a URL to an external source. OR it could be an additional option IF it has been added. What do you think?

I've considered that but after doing some samples I found that often I get info from external websites which aren't in the library, and having to add them would be cumbersome and a threshold to adding this description. So that's why it's not done as such.

I suggest we try it out for a while, and if we see that a large part of the descriptions do come from library items, then we can perhaps add that as an option - or replace it if we really find it's the one way to go. What do you think?

I agree that it would indeed by a threshold for items that aren't in the library yet. It would be nice to have as an option for those that do exist.
BUT, I'm ofc fine with testing it like this for a while. I'm curious to see to which extent this will be used anyway.

OK perfect, let's see!
