Description

Currently we can only set a single color for a map. However, sometimes you may want different elements on a map to have different colors:

  • If you have only a handful of objects and you want to differentiate them
  • If you have grouped areas by type (say you have biodiversity regions, grouped by CONSERVED, THREATENED, LOST)

Then it becomes very handy to differentiate by colors - as long as we show a legend of sorts. Let's try to build this.

New mapping tools have been added. The system now allows for multiple colors to be shown, selecting from a suite of schemes. I used the same color schemes we had for the bar charts, and decided to add a few schemes to the list based on single color tones (sometimes handy when you want to differentiate but you don't want wildly different colors on-screen).

You can only select multiple colors for a map if the number of associated spaces is more than 1 (otherwise it makes no sense), and less than or equal to 12 (otherwise there will be too many colors). If these conditions are met, AND the shapefile is "grouped by name" which means that somehow various areas are grouped together, the system will by default use a color scheme instead of a single color. It can always be changed in the settings.

Nice one! Does that mean we could also do choropleth maps? And the colour changing with the value? If we have electricity use per municipality for instance?


Hey Aris, choropleth maps are almost there. I need some help from Guus with the front-end part - hopefully that is easy. This was about a different kinda topic though as it was about the maps (reference spaces), not about the data shown in map format. The latter currently has a "bubble" map where we show the size, and that is the one we need to convert to a choropleth if we have the shapefile for the underlying reference space (for instance this one). Stay tuned - hopefully available soon!
