In a collaboration between Metabolism of Cities, Tsinghua University, School of Environment, local partners, and the International Society of Industrial Ecology Sustainable Urban Systems Section, and the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a seminar on urban metabolism in policy and practice was held on July 6, 2019 in Beijing, China. The Seminar funding was made possible by the Urban Studies Foundation.
The seminar was organised by our members Paul Hoekman, Dr. Gabriela Fernandez, and Yupeng Liu. During this event a number of conversations, World Cafe activities, presentations, and discussions took place on how urban metabolism practices could be better applied in the city of Beijing, China. During the seminar Metabolism of Cities aimed to bring together a variety of people from government, academia, and practice. In addition, the seminar focused on getting a more systematic understanding of the local city’s resources and the relationship between different resources and how they flow through the city, with a specific focus on locally specific environmental challenges. This event forms part of a seminar series, which includes events in Cape Town (South Africa), Beijing (China), and Brussels (Belgium).
